New main railway station in Brno has an approved project plan

The Central Commission of the Ministry of Transport approved the project concept for the reconstruction of the Brno railway junction. It is a crucial milestone in the preparation of the modernisation of the entire local junction and also the construction of the new main station in the South Moravian metropolis. The construction work itself is expected to take place between 2028 and 2035.

The reconstruction of the Brno railway junction is one of the priority projects not only of the Czech Republic but also of the European Union. The aim of the project is the complete modernisation of the double-track line, which today serves the passage of freight trains outside the Brno Main Station. A completely new central station will be built on the site of the current station Brno dolní nádraží. The construction will provide sufficient capacity for the planned range of passenger and freight railway service. At the same time, it will enable the connection of high-speed lines from Prague and Břeclav to the new passenger railway station.

From the passenger's point of view, the most important part of this project is the design of the new main station, the construction of the Brno-Černovice stop and, last but not least, the reconstruction of the Brno-Židenice station with platforms located closer to the tram stops in Bubeníčkova Street.

The approval of the project is an important milestone for the Statutory City of Brno. Mutual cooperation with Správa železnic is developing most in the area of the new main station, where a key interchange terminal between rail and public transport will be built. The preparation of the entire project follows an architectural competition and a completed study by the Dutch association Benthem and Crouwel and West 8. The new station will also be important for high-speed trains. It will be served by trains connecting, among others, Prague with Vienna and Ostrava.

Next year already Správa železnic plans to start the first construction in the Brno junction, namely the modernisation of the line section Brno-Židenice – branch line Brno-Černovice, which will include the construction of retaining walls with noise barriers and the reconstruction of bridges in Jílkova and Filipínského Streets. Work should also begin on the modernisation of the Brno-Židenice station and modifications of the nearby Brno-Maloměřice station, which also deals with the reconstruction of the bridge over Bubeníčkova Street.

After the approval of the project plan, the project documentation will be commissioned, which will also specify the costs for the transformation of the entire railway junction.
